Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin devices that adhere to the front surfaces of teeth. They can be used to treat an array of cosmetic issues such as pits, worn edges, cracks, deep stains, and chips.

They can also help teeth appear straighter by filling in gaps between teeth. Veneers are tinted to match the person’s neighboring teeth so they will blend in and look very natural.

Veneers commonly take two appointments to place. During the first appointment, the tooth surfaces will be prepared to receive the veneer. This is done by shaving down a thin layer of the outer surface of the tooth. Then, an impression will be made and sent to a dental lab where the veneer will be made to the precise specifications.

During the second appointment, the veneer will be secured to the tooth surface using a special adhesive, then mildly buffed so it fits comfortably.

How are veneers applied?

First, Dr. Satvat cleans and prepares your teeth for the veneer. To do so, she removes a thin layer of the enamel to ensure a snug fit and that it lies evenly with the surrounding teeth.

Once room has been made for the veneer, Dr. Satvat creates an impression of the area for the veneer. The patient wears a temporary veneer to protect the tooth while the permanent veneer is at the lab.

During the following appointment, a strong dental adhesive is used to attach the permanent veneer. The porcelain is then smoothed and shaped to provide a smooth finish and even fit.

What is the most common type of veneers?

Porcelain veneers are used most frequently because they’re very durable and look extremely natural and attractive. They can both cover misshapen, crooked or broken teeth and stains, and even out tooth edges to provide a more uniform look to a smile.
