Have you tried teeth whitening without much success? Dental veneers are a good option. They are able to conceal the yellowing appearance of teeth, as well as covering up other imperfections and they look natural, are strong and can last for a long time. There are two types of veneers available: porcelain and composite resin veneers. Resin veneers are a type of plastic.

What can porcelain veneers do?

When selecting porcelain veneers a shade is chosen to compliment your skin tone, lip shape and tone that will make your teeth appear healthy and white. It is important that the color chosen looks natural and blends in with any adjacent teeth. Following a teeth whitening procedure first will ensure your teeth with veneers will match your other teeth. Porcelain veneers also offer a convenient alternative to braces. We can correctcrooked or misaligned teeth in just 2 weeks or less instead of months or years which is often required with braces.

How are the teeth prepared?

To prepare a tooth for a veneer, our dentist will remove about 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the tooth’s surface. If this wasn’t done the tooth would be too thick once the veneer is in place. We will make an impression of your tooth or teeth which is sent to our dental laboratory and the veneer, or veneers, is prepared. Typically, this takes 1-2 weeks but we can fit temporary veneers for that time period.

Before we fix the custom made dental veneer permanently to your tooth, we will position it on your tooth to check for color and fit. It may be necessary to remove the veneer and trim it to ensure a good fit. Polishing and etching takes place and by roughening it allows for a strong bonding process. The final process is painting cement on to the veneer and fixing it permanently onto your tooth.

What can plastic or composite bonding do?

There is a difference between porcelain veneers, which we have to make in a dental laboratory and composite resin bonding, which we can fit in a single visit. We will remove some of the enamel so that the tooth is not too thick once the bonding takes place. The composite resin is put in place and we then cure it with a light and shape and polish it. This method of concealing a tooth’s unsightly appearance is quicker and less expensive than a custom made veneer. It does have drawbacks, such as a greater chance of cracking and breaking off, and it is more likely to suffer from staining. We prefer to use dental bonding for small cosmetic changes.
